John Henry Smeath was born March 18, 1902, in Montpelier, Vermont, to James Charles Smeath and Frances Mae Brown Smeath. Despite his family's financial hardships, he chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning in September 1923. On October 10, 1928, Smeath married Alice Delores Anderson, with whom he had five children. Smeath died from cardiac arrest on January 20, 1994 in Springville, Utah.
